Sir Richard, m.a.d.woman wants ride with Virgin - 29 October 2009

Dear Sir Richard Branson

It’s not that long ago that you told the world you needed a driver in Australia. Oh Sir Richard, join the club!

Truth be told, I would have loved to schlep you round, but at the time of your competition (http://virginmoney.com.au/driving-sir-richard/) I had a really busy diary of my own.

Let me introduce myself, I’m Melina Schamroth, the m.a.d.woman – that’s m.a.d. as in making a difference.  I’m a social entrepreneur who spends her time finding ways to make a positive difference to this planet and the people in it.

I admit that the thought of how people might have reacted at hearing “Virgin invites m.a.d.woman to the Grand Prix” brought a smile to my face. However, even if I had managed against all odds to win, my days and nights were chockablock running events to feed hungry and homeless people, support bushfire victims and help neglected animals.

You said you wanted someone who could drive you, surf and who was interested in Icebergs. Sadly the only surfing I do is of the Net and when it comes to Icebergs, I’m know I’m only hitting the tip of them with my social and environmental programs.

I’m sure Shane'o did a really great job and to be really honest, I’m a little lost without a GPS, so that possibly would have counted against me. However, for future reference, what I lack in navigational skills, I more than make up for in creative ideas for getting out of jams, be they traffic or otherwise.

Here’s the thing, my own little car is always packed to the rafters, carting stuff to help people and I need to find a practical solution. Short of saying a prayer to the God of Sponsorship in the hope that a car company might help out, maybe I should be putting out my own call for a driver (any chance you can recommend someone?)…

Look you’re busy, I’m busy. But seriously, I reckon we could fit a heap of stuff in your big chauffeur-driven shiny London cab, so if you’re ever back in Melbourne with a little extra time up your sleeve, it would be awesome if you could give me a lift to bushfire-ravaged zones…

Melina Schamroth is the Founder and CEO of m.a.d.woman, author of How to be m.a.d. (making a difference) and m.a.d. (making a difference) in a green way.
